Hike Shingletown Gap & Visit Bellefonte

Thursday, May 11 - Join us for a short hike along the Shingletown Gap Trail, followed by visit to Talleyrand Park in nearby Bellefonte, PA where we will have lunch at a Chinese Buffet.

Schedule:   (all times are approximate)

  10:00am - leave State College, and drive 15 minutes to the Shingletown Gap trail, for an easy level hike along a scenic trail in the woods

  12:00noon - after leaving Shingletown Gap we will drive 25 minutes to Bellefonte where we will eat lunch at Bellefonte Wok Buffet

   1:00pm - a brief visit in Faith Centre - a thrift store with assorted used items and clothing - a fun place to browse - all proceeds go to charity

               - walk a short distance to Talleyrand Park and feed the ducks!

   2:30pm - return to State College (return time is approximate, it could be 3:00pm)

Wednesday, May 10 - Visit the Belleville Farmer's Market  & Peights Country Store in nearby (40 minutes drive) Belleville, PA - This is a great local tradition with lots of vendors outside selling food, crafts, hardware, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other low priced items.  There's also a variety of foods to purchase: ice cream, kettle corn, baked goods, french fries -- all of the healthy types of foods we all enjoy :) etc.   Bring cash and pay as you go - it's fun!  After visiting the farmer's market we will drive over to Peight's Country Store which is a small country store selling lots of reasonably priced groceries, fresh cut meats and cheeses and assorted household items - it's a unique place :)

It is a great experience which combines (1) sharing the Thanksgiving holiday with an American family in their home, (2) sightseeing at famous places of the Boston area (such as Harvard, MIT, and historical sites of the American Revolution), and (3) the opportunity to learn about the Christian faith through a guest speaker. We'll drive to Lancaster, PA (about a 2 hour drive) where we'll take a driving tour of the Amish community, including stopping at various locations and businesses.  After lunch we'll take a bike ride on a nearby bike trail and end the day with dinner at the Grace Baptist Church.

Jim Adams, recently retired Deputy Chief Technology Officer for NASA, will give a lecture at 7:00pm in room 112 of the Kern Building, on the topic, "The Search for Life Beyond Earth."  Using NASA satellite photos and drawing on years of experience, Mr. Adams will share the latest findings on NASA's quest to discover life beyond our planet.   Free and open to the public.

A free dinner is served at 6:15pm in the Garden Room of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. After dinner, we'll simply walk over to the nearby Kern Building.

NIAGARA FALLS WEEKEND TOUR

THIS TRIP IS NOW FULL

The IMPS weekend trip to Niagara Falls on Sept. 9 - 11, is a great opportunity to not only see the world-famous Niagara Falls, but also to stay with an American host in their home and experience a worship service at their church.  We will be staying with hosts from a church in Gasport, NY.  The entire day on Saturday will involve sightseeing at the Niagara Falls area.  After the church service on Sunday we will have lunch together with all the hosts before returning to Penn State that afternoon.  This trip is limited to 28 people, so register early!

Visit the Grange Fair in nearby Centre Hall, typical of many annual fairs in rural America, with shows of farm animals and equipment, and interesting exhibits and entertainers.  Leave from in front of the Bryce Jordan Center at 4:00 PM; return to campus at 8:30 PM. Walk to the top of Mt. Nittany

A short ride to the nearby town of Lemont takes us to the base of Mt. Nittany. A steady walk of about 30 minutes to the top provides a panoramic view of Penn State. After we reach the summit we will walk for another 30 minutes on trails at the top with other overlooks before walking back down the mountain.  For the hike you should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a bottle of water. Register here.  Each trip is Limited to 40 people. (a second hike is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13)

This hike will depart at 3:00pm from in front of the Bryce Jordan Center, at the CATA Bus Stop.  The Bryce Jordan Center is located at the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road.

America's only all-water cavern, involving a guided one-hour underground boat tour of the cavern in nearby Centre Hall. Buffalo International Conference

BUFFALO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

 

This event will be held over the Memorial Day holiday (May 27-30) in the Buffalo, NY area. It is a great experience, which combines staying with an American family in their home, sightseeing at the spectacular Niagara Falls, and the opportunity to learn about the Christian faith through a guest speaker and workshops on various topics. This conference is sponsored by International Students, Inc., a Christian organization which welcomes the participation of all international students/scholars regardless of their beliefs.

     Our group from Penn State will be led by Bill Saxton. We will leave from the lobby of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on Friday, May 27 at 12:30 PM. (Please have lunch before then.) We will leave Buffalo on Monday morning (Memorial Day holiday) at 8:30 AM, and we should arrive back in State College by 2 PM.


     To register, please obtain a copy of the Conference brochure with additional information and the registration form which can be downloaded and then printed from here. Then you will need to complete the Conference Registration Form, sign it, and return it to Bill Saxton, with a check for $45, payable to “International Students, Inc.”, to cover the Conference Fee. You will also need to pay an additional $50, in cash or in a separate check payable to “Bill Saxton” for your share of the transportation costs. So the total cost is only $95 for this wonderful weekend experience! For young children ages 5-12 the Conference Fee is $20 and transportation cost is $25.  (Note: The cost of special sight-seeing experiences at Niagara Falls, such as the “Maid of the Mist” boat ride and the “Cave of the Winds” are not included in this price.)

If you come to the IMPSU office (201-A Eisenhower Chapel) to register and no one is there, you can place the registration form and payment in an envelope, and slide the envelope under the locked office door. We will then contact you to confirm that we received your payment. This trip is limited to the first 14 people who register. Registration deadline is Friday, April 29, though the trip probably will be full before then, so don’t wait to register!

 
     What to bring: A bed, blankets, pillow, and towel will all be provided for you, so you only need to bring clothes and personal items such as a toothbrush, camera, and shampoo.

Backpacking & Hiking - Wilderness Trek

Come join us on a 7-day wilderness adventure in America's great outdoors!

First, we'll set up camp in the beautiful mountains of Pennsylvania, on the famous Appalachian Trail.  Each day of the trip will be spent learning about the God of the Bible and discovering the amazing world He created. Enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, camping, and exploring, as well as a trip to the historic Gettysburg battlefield!  

Important information:  

Cost: $99.  You must register by May 16.

Equipment: You will need a sleeping bag, mat, backpack and water bottle.  (Bridges will provide food, tents & camp equipment, etc.) 

This trip could change how you view yourself, others, God and even the world!

Space is limited to 15, so sign up early.  We expect students from Penn State, as well as other schools, to participate in this year's Trek experience. Both men and women are welcome!
